A rear end shunt accident occurs where a vehicle fails to break and hits the back of another vehicle or motorcycle. This type of accident is also known as “being rear ended.” You may have been sitting at an intersection waiting for the light to change and never even see the car that hits you. In some instances, a rear end shunt accident will cause the rider to be completely thrown from the bike, resulting in serious spinal and neck injuries.
Injuries that are commonly associated with a rear end shunt accident include:
Spinal Cord Injuries: Unfortunately, spinal cord injuries are not uncommon. It is suspected that up to 10,000 people in the U.S. are affected by these injuries every year. A spinal cord injury (SCI) is characterized by damage to the spinal cord that results in a loss of function. A SCI can lead to partial or complete paralysis, or loss of sensation in the extremities.
Whiplash: The human head is relatively heavy compared to the delicate structures of the neck, and a sudden impact gives the victim no time to brace himself or herself. An impact from a vehicle results in a jarring head movement, which is called whiplash. This sudden movement causes damage to the joints, nerves, discs and muscles of the neck. Extreme whiplash can cause bruising of the brain. Whiplash can cause headaches, dizziness, pain, stiffness, vertigo and a host of other problems.
Traumatic Brain Injury: This injury is occurs when a blow or other trauma injures the brain. This can cause swelling and bruising of the brain, as well as intracranial bleeding in more serious cases. The skull may also be fractured or cracked, which is known as a penetrating head injury. Depending on the severity of the impact, these injuries can be very serious and even fatal.
Rear end shunt accidents are considered various dangerous in terms of injuries because there is so little protection afforded the motorcyclist. In most states, consider the colliding vehicle at fault, as do insurance companies. Whether you were hit from behind, or you rear ended someone else, it is important to seek legal counsel right away. The insurance companies are not always on your side, and legal issues can arise that could hamper your efforts to receive compensation.
