Monsanto Company was founded in 1901 and is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri. In the 1970s, Monsanto developed the well-known herbicide Roundup® which contains a chemical called Glyphosate.
According to National Pesticide Information Center, Glyphosate is an herbicide that kills broadleaf plants and grasses. Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup®
Farmers, home owners, and workers have used Roundup® for decades to control weeds. Now, Roundup® has been linked to causing cancer and people are dying.
Several investigations conclude Roundup®- specifically glyphosate- causes serious health problems, including cancer. Roundup’s ® main component, glyphosate is highly carcinogenic to humans. In fact, after several studies on rats and mice, The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), determined it was a “probable human carcinogen.”
In recent years, multiples lawsuits have been filed against Monsanto Company. Due to the exposure and continuous contact with the product, the victims developed different diseases. One of the most dangerous is non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a type of cancer. It starts in lymphocytes (white blood cells), attacks the body’s immune system and develops in the lymphatic system. One of the most common symptoms of this lymphoma is a painless swelling in a lymph node, usually in the neck, armpit or groin. Unfortunately, Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is one of the many side effects that continuous exposure to glyphosate can cause. People who are exposed to Roundup® may suffer from other types of cancer as well. It is extremely important that people who were or are still in contact with these Monsanto products, take the necessary actions to rule out any of these diseases.
In Johnson v. Monsanto, a California jury determined Monsanto was liable for causing cancer in connection with its Roundup® product. This was the first personal injury case againt Monsanto to go to trial. Mr. Johnson worked as a school gardener and utilized Monsanto’s herbicide Roundup® and other products from the same company. Due to the constant exposure to these products, he was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer at age of 42.After a highly contested trial, a San Francisco Superior Court jury awarded him $250 million in punitive damages and almost $39 million in compensatory damages. One of the allegations presented by Mr. Johnson’s attorneys was that Monsanto never warned consumers about the potential risks or side effects of continuous exposure to Glyphosate. The jury’s verdict sent a strong message to Monsanto.
Monsanto products have been taken off the market in several countries, especially in Europe. However, despite the World Health Organization classifying glyphosate as a probable carcinogen, in the United States, this dangerous chemical continues to be sold and Monsanto continues to deny the link between the glyphosate and cancer.
Like Mr. Johnson, there are hundreds and maybe thousands of people who were likewise exposed and developed cancer. Many of those people have taken legal action against Monsanto.
First and more important, if you or someone you know has been in constant contact with any product that contains glyphosate, you should go to your doctor and rule out any disease or injury.
