Our Missouri Invega lawyers are currently accepting male clients who experienced enlarged breast tissue (gynocomastia) after taking Invega.
Invega (also known as Parliperdone), is an antipsychotic drug used to treat schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a brain disorder that distorts a person’s thinking, their perception of reality, how they relate to others, and how they express their emotions. This medication is also used to treat depression and bipolar disorder. Interestingly, science is still not sure exactly how this medication works. Though it is becoming evident that it can cause serious health consequences, including gynocomastia in men, Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS), and Tardive Dyskinesia.
Johnson and Johnson, a subsidiary of Janssen Pharmaceuticals released this drug in 2006, for the treatment of schizophrenia. While the exact mechanics of how this drug works is not understood, scientists believe that the drug is a major active metabolite of Resperidone (an antipsychotic). It is believed Invega blocks dopamine type 2 and serotonin type 2 in the brain. Dopamine in excessive amounts causes hallucinations and abnormal thinking. It is thought that this excess of dopamine encourages the pituitary gland to produce prolactin, which is a hormone that stimulates breast growth and milk production. It appears that abnormally high levels can cause gynocomastia in men and spontaneous lactation in women.
A study in 2006 published in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology found Invega caused excessive production of prolactin, which leads to gynocomastia in males. This disorder causes young boys and men to develop breasts, not unlike a woman’s. Interestingly, the patient will develop not only additional fat in the breast area, but also glandular tissue. The degree of breast enlargement will vary from case to case, and it can effect one or both breasts. In some cases, the patient will produce breast milk. In April 2013, the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery published an article discussing what a large impact this disorder has on young men. As you can imagine, this disorder can cause extreme emotional distress in a child. A young boy could endure significant teasing, bullying and have serious self-esteem issues.
Invega is not to be taken by pregnant women and can cause withdrawal symptoms in babies. There is suspicion that the drug is also linked with hyperglycemia and diabetes. It also causes a disorder called Extrapyramidal (EPS) which includes the following symptoms:
The use of Invega has been linked to Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS). This is a potentially fatal disorder that causes the following symptoms:
It is also suspected Invega is linked to a disorder called Tardive Dyskinesia which causes irreversible symptoms such as:
The drug is considered unsafe for elderly patients. The Federal Food and Drug Administration reported dementia patients are 1.6 to 1.7 times more likely to die from several ailments including pneumonia and heart disease.
Invega lawsuits are being filed against Johnson & Johnson for failure to warn and product defect theories.
In August of 2012, Johnson & Johnson settled a group of Invega cases in 36 states for 181 million dollars. But, new cases continue to mount. These cases include a request for damages such as:
