Saint Francois County is located directly south of Saint Louis County, in the region of the state commonly known as the Lead Belt. Saint Francois County covers 450 square miles between the counties of Jefferson, Madison, Washington and Saint Genevieve, and is considered part of the Greater Saint Louis Area. The major cities in Saint Francois County include Desloge, Farmington, Park Hills and Bonne Terre. Mark Twain National Forest and Saint Joe State Park are both located in Saint Francois County.

Much of the county’s terrain is filled with hills and significant slopes. U.S. Route 67 is a major north–south route in the county travelling through Farmington. Missouri Routes 8, 32, and 47 are the state’s highways that connect the other populated areas throughout Saint Francois County.
